KUNIYOSHI - BEAUTY
Japan 19th Century Woodblock print
Size: 26 x 37.5 cm
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), a member of the Utagawa school, was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints. This fine print was executed almost entirely in Prussian blue only, a style called aizuri-e. In print of the higher order, such as this one, the blue was used in multiple shades. If another colour beyong blue is present in aizuri-e prints, it is usually red, used sparingly to create a eye-catching accents, such as here at in the lifted folds of the cloth just above the feet and, in the body of the dragonfly and several other spots - all faded to ochre, unlike the Prussian blue which is highly resistant to fading and still vibrant. This print is the middle one of a tryptich of three beauties entitled 'Tosei fuzoku ko', published by Enomotoya Kichibe.
Full sets are very rare. One, with stronger reds but in bad overall condition (two of the prints apparently glued to backing), was sold by Christies in 2013.
Condition: Very good, far better than the sister piece shown above
Provenance: Van Peet, Amsterdam
