HIROSHIGE - SNOW-COVERED GARDEN

Japan
Published 1854
Woodblock prints
Size: 23 x 34 cm

Two parts of a woodblock tryptich titled 'The eastern Genji in the snow-covered garden', created in collaboration by Utagawa Hiroshige, a.k.a. Hiroshige 1 (1797-1858) and Utagawa Kunisada 1, a.k.a. Toyokuni 3 (1786-1864). The right and left sheets were signed Toyokuni ga, and the center sheet signed Yuki no kei oju (Snow landscape on request) Hiroshige hitsu, with artist's Ichiryusai seal, aratame censor seal, date seal Tora juni (year of the tiger [1854], 12th month), and publisher's seal of Mori, Ba, Ni, Moriji (Moriya Jihei of Kinshindo), 1854. Excellent background information on this print is found in the work of Edward F. Strange, online at the Hiroshige Organisation.

Note that it is not uncommon to find incomplete sets of just a single print, as we find in the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. The full tryptich, collection Harvard, is shown below.
